I used to teach GPS, the reason for your 20 mile innacuracy is basically an argument, when the satnav was powered down it thought it was in one place, being that these units are dynamic (constantly live) it assumes it is still within (x) metres of it's previous position and trying desperately to relocate the last group of satellites ( or the group the almanac tells it are there) and if it can't find them it assumes no satellites are "alive". Therefore, the two options are...wait and it will eventually recontact a "current" satellite and find a huge positional offset and force a re-find for any satellite, or, use the manual reset procedure previously described in this thread.
