Several years ago I tried old toothbrushes for these areas but ended up marking the paintwork so I thought it best to ask folks who know what they are doing!

THESE. Use one regularly for around the 'corners' of the wheels and their bolt recesses.
Every so often, Lidl do a pack of brushes, which include sash brashes, made from wood and plastic. They would be 'adequate' but the bristles do fall out readily, however they are very soft in use.
