Many thanks everyone so far. I've fed back the comments to the garage - I use them for other cars and they are normally pretty clued up about non-Rovers so would be surprised if they had missed a basic problem. It does seem strange that the car was working fine until parked, left for a few minutes and then failed to start. Both AA and garage suspected the engine had seized but I will obviously ensure they have tried to turn by hand before thinking about what to do next.
I presume a competent mechanic would know what to try to turn so see if a 2.5 V6 engine was seized????
