As the OP does report a non flickering rev counter on cranking would a fuel filter issue lead to this - to me it suggests the crank sensor is not working.

I know the OP has fitted a new sensor so there is small chance it is duff - i had a BMW Siemens sensor fitted 18 months ago and it it failed within 3 weeks and that is considered the premium sensor for our cars.
