I changed the trim about 8 months ago, it was literally falling apart. New trim is quite pricey at about £150, but I removed the old trim without breaking anything, and cleaned out nearly 20 years of dirt. It did leak into my boot when it rained heavily, and I was looking to seal something. However everything looked fine, so I just fitted the new trim and it's never leaked since. Daft as it sounds, I'm thinking it was the dirt that was causing the problem, but don't ask me how! I just know it's never leaked since.
