I've had this problem too. On closer inspection I found that an inaccurately cut carpet around the mounting hole was preventing the clips from engaging fully.
Another cause is re-using the fir tree clip. They're designed to deform when fitted so should really be replaced with new for reliability. As the genuine part can be very expensive I used the equivalent from Byronix Automotive Fasteners (coloured yellow) which is identical apart from being slightly longer which actually helps them to be more secure.
I think that persevering is probably better than spoiling the trim with exposed screw heads.

The yellow clips are not identical, they are made from polypropylene not acetal resin like the originals.
