Not being a diesel owner, isn't the problem that engine oil can easily be spilt on the alternator during an oil change?

That's one of the problems - yes. Another is that the alternator is simply under a lot of loads in the diesels - lots of fuel pumps, injectors that pull a good amount of power and glow plugs taking a chunk of the battery charge each time the engine is started.
The petrol models tend to have a much lower running power requirement, and thus less load on the alternator.
