Much appreciate your comments. I did have a peak at the fuel in the tank and it looked clear. I think some particulates came from the very old 'O' rings. However, they weren't that bad. The large one was stretched. Of the smaller ones, the bottom one was a little brittle and broke easily and the one in the canister top put up a fight to get off!
It did seem to me that the filter had done it's job and kept the bits from going further downstream.( I have a new tank seal coming from Rimmers which it looks like I don't need since I seated the old seal properly!)
The car ran great on the test, 70 mph for a few miles on the A30, so one happy camper.
