What you need Ian is what's known as a Merino wool "base layer" from Cotswold Outdoor or similar. On top of that add a T-shirt, a thick sleeved shirt and old woollen jumper and trousers. A hat is essential to curb heat loss as are thick wool socks (also available from outdoor clothing shops).

You'll be so cosy in that lot that you'll positively be looking for tasks to do outside.

The key is layering and natural fibres.
