It's best not to "think" but to test and be sure!
The test I described will reveal any faults in the entire fuel pump circuit. Another member recently had the same symptoms as you. We traced it to damaged wiring between the engine and passenger footwell fuseboxes, so be cautious about relying too much upon a twitching rev. counter.
