when you get to the 1700s, you have to become creative in where to look (also have to remember too, that simply there may not be records to be found). Church records generally would be the best place to search around this time (baptisms, burials and marriages).
PRONI (mentioned above) have a number of online PDF leaflets which are quite useful, particularly for Irish ancestry, but the principles will still apply to England and Scotland.
