I may try this but I guess it involves lying down and sticking my arm up which doesn't really appeal so I may take it to the garage.

So, it could be a dodgy thermostat (was replaced 5 years ago), an airlock (there's been nothing done to the cooling system so it shouldn't be that), faulty sensor (unlikely?) or how about the water pump (that was replaced 5 years ago)? Is there anything else that could account for it?
