If the thermostat was not opening, causing the bottom radiator hose to remain cold, the engine would get hotter. It would also be a very unusual mode of failure on a diesel cooling system.
If you're losing coolant or have had work done on the car requiring draining of the coolant, then you may have an air lock if it wasn't bled properly. Alternatively the radiator may be blocked.
