Anything up to 10% leakage is considered as an acceptable leak so a system should last 4 or 5 years between refills even at this rate. If the system is loosing its charge in 12 months you need to find the leak and it should be fairly easy. Look for oil stains or traces of the dye on the AC pipes and components.

The problem is a lot of places leave a machine to do the job with little or no monitoring as to what is happening and I have even heard of some places just pressing the ''OK'' button when it flashes up there is a leak outside limits.

Mobile engineers usually do a better job and in most cases will let you watch what they are doing.
