I don't think it is possible without removing the gearbox. I don't have personal experience of the V6 but the pics I've viewed online show the engine number on the mating surface of the engine and the gearbox. The site in the following link has a few pics of this showing both Rover 75 and Land Rover Freelander engines which I suspect are the same.
