Whilst agreeing that the profit level is pathetic, it seems obviously to me why - too high prices, so customers are only buying a minimum spend. They are not going in to do their weekly big spend shop. Trolleys are left unused, most are not even needing to use a basket, their entire buy is in their hands and arms, often a single item. Paying for a couple of items at the till, costs almost as much staff time as if it were numerous items.
