Took the wheels and rear drums off the wife's Polo to check the condition of the "sef-adjusting" handbrake that wasn't! They seem to get full of rust dust which stops the shoes expanding fully to activate the self adjust mechanism. Rust dust cleaned out and one helpful "click" on each adjuster and all is well again. Apart from those drum retaining screws with the silly heads made of cheese. Despite not being overtightened and being smeared with coppaslip, they still stick and have to be persuaded to release (centre punch at an angle). New ones on order (proper stainless jobbies with a proper allen key head) and the old ones have a normal screwdriver slot cut in as a temporary fix!
