I think smooth driving, tyres, low sped torque (i.e. diesel engine) and an automatic gearbox should all help. Even without traction control.
Last Winter my car did really well in snowy conditions even with only 3mm on my Vredestein Sessantas. The Bridgestone Potenzas that I replaced them with don't seem half as good even with double the tread depth. I think the broad diagonal bands on the Sessantas must be the key.
