Other cultures are curious things. The Chinese people are usually deferential to each other with marked behaviour patterns full of apparent respect - especially to strangers - or at least they are in my admittedly limited experience. Yet catastrophes like the current one, and their submission to ruthless government, are at odds with everything else. Inscrutable is perhaps apt.
