Not even putting your vehicle in gear will stop it if like in the early 70s, My Forman and I stopped for lunch at a certain eatery, went inside after putting on handbrake, and putting it in 1st gear. About ten minutes later, a chap came in and shouted ‘whose is the lorry with the turf on the back’. Both of us said mine, we were delivering 300 yards of turf each. ‘ Well you might want to stop it, it is jumping it’s way across the car park’ Both shot outside to see the Forman’s lorry going across the car park towards a garden centres property. Jumped into cab put his foot on brake and it stopped. We were laughing about it, when it started off again. Long story short. There was a short on the starter motor which had threw the bendix into the flywheel and drove the lorry across the car park.We had to take the lead off the starter which was glowing red/white hot to make sure it did not happen again.
