The ratchet noise is annoying anyway, always push the button in, unless counting the notches to a full application.

I agree on the rusty drum problem, the handbrake needs to be given just a tiny amount of regular work to do, to keep it free of rust. Regular application of the handbrake in the last few yards, just before you come to a stop, will keep it smooth and shiny for best grip.
