The first thing to do is find out which type is fitted, 3-speed or 2-speed. If it's the original factory fitted fan, it's likely 3-speed. However, many failed fans have been replaced with the later 2-speed. Looke for a resistor behind the fan blades in the 2 o'clock position. If so, it's the later 2-speed version. Once you know the type, it makes the rest more straight forward.

Diesels rarely require fan cooling for the engine, which run much cooler than petrol engines. The temperature gauge doesn't really tell you anything useful. The 'normal' mark covers the range from 75C (too cool) to 115C (too hot). The diesel should normally run around the 88C area. The radiator fan would normally trip on at about 100C. This is where the diagnostic mode comes into its own.
