Before fabricating a roll cage, weld up some test pieces using the tube that you will make the cage from.

Put these in a vice and try your best to destroy them using a 4lb hammer, if the welds break or show any signs of fracture, start over again until they are strong enough.

Sounds like I preaching but I have seen some potential disasters on bike / trike frames. You gotta be 100% when lives could be at stake.
