Colvert, how do you get that idea? The alternator puts out 115amps max, the charger less than 5amps. Proof of the pudding. Car had 2 or 3 stops on the way south, including using a good deal of electricity on lights, wipers, heater fan etc., and always restarted perfectly (2 fast turns of the engine max) I had never heard the alternator hum like that, so decided to give the car a good local run A) to find out if the sound was due to the battery being low after the car had been standing for 4 months, and B) so that if the alternator was about to fail, it would do so close to home. As proven, my hunch was right, and the already reduced hum, disappeared completely within the first 10 miles of my long journey. Incidentally, I tried starting it 3 months into its SORN - all it did was click, so I put it on an overnight charge - around 18hrs, and it started fine. Next time I SORN it, I'll give it a charge more often.
