At a local meet some years ago, there was a ZT that had a "pod" of dials fitted vertically on drivers side the "A" pillar. Looked pretty good, but obviously not suitable if you have air bags fitted there.
No idea how it impacted the drivers view though, but didn't look as if it would make much difference
