After having 3 rover 75s and a zt180 all at the one time, i sold off all the 75s and still kept the zt.
I used to drive 300km to our holiday house regularly in the various 75s and never once did they ever give me an issue on the road.
The Zt is now in the garage at the holiday house so and when there i love to fire it up and take it for a spin
I now drive a recent model jeep grand cherokee diesel turbo and must say it drives really well, goes like a rocket and is way more comfortable for long trips
but as said the newer cars just miss somthing in the ambience dept.
As mentioned, everything in the newer cars is coded, needs dealer gear to sort out anything electrical and the parts prices are crazy (jeep price for a headlight is about $2,500 aud) but as mentioned you eventually need somthing reliable that you can jump into and go without worrying if its age.
As for new car issues- see all manufacturers are having issues, Toyota with blown pistons in some models, kia, jeep with bearings, Bmw etc electrical issues.
These days its a bit of a lottery.
