public transport in the sticks is pretty poor, can be a long way to station and buses not regular but when I lived in London the busses and trains were quite good. For about 3 years and living in the sticks I caught the train to and from work, was on time and only once or twice was cancelled.
I think location has a bit to do with frequency of public transport.
I am for keeping my 2 diesels, I don't see it as cost effective to change to a newer car and I happen to like driving my cars
