So the noise is only heard when you're in the car and pulling away. The pulling away factor suggests it's associated with the lower tie bar, which involves the engine rocking/vibrating. The fact that braking seems to stop the noise would also be consistant with this. A failing crank pulley certainly sounds like a tin can of nuts, but tends to be worse at tickover, settling down when it's revved. You might try the hosepipe test. Spray water onto the crankshaft and see if the noise reduces or disappears. It won't affext the noise from a rattling tie bar.
