Could be due to other things of course that aren't anything to do with the later cars, but maybe the deletion of the fuel burning heater affects autos more than manuals?

One of the conditions for the gearbox locking up is the ATF having to warm up, and that is directly related to engine coolant temperature via the auto trans heat exchanger, so possible that a longer warm up time may affect the autobox efficiency?
