Few photo's below showing where the O-ring fits on the cap.
It as as been known for them to be fitted just under the head of the oil filter cap 
Also smear with a little new oil before fitting the cap.

I think I will have to check on mine now. The upper recess is where it was when I did it the first time, and have fitted it there ever since. I always thought the next groove down was part of the thread, but cannot recall now.
