Essentialy it is pond which your waste water drains in to not an enclosed tank like a cesspit. As you can imagine they are not very common now ! but the name dates back to medieval times when thats were waste water was disposed off.

Cesspit and cesspool are often use to mean the same. I suppose historically a pit could be man made and a pool a natural feature and over time the pit became covered.

A soakaway field has a series of perforated pipes normally in a herring bone pattern close to the ground which allows the water from a septic tank or treatement plant to soak back into the ground. Sometimes called an infitration trench or field.
