When it comes to the time I need to change my tyres, I'll go for Avons. I had ZV7s on my Mondeo and my ZS before that with directional ZV1s on my 216GTi and 416. Never had a problem with excessive wear or cracking. Grip seems progressive and doesn't suddenly give up on cornering.
I'm currently running a mixed bag of budget brands (Landsail and something else) that the previous owner had fitted. They're OK and fine for just pootling around, but I much prefer to press on a bit.
