The OEM highline and lowline systems cannot be software updated, they are software locked unlike their BMW counterparts.

Also you need to make sure your friend uses a CD mapping disc, not a DVD disc as it only reads CDs.

I would start by looking on eBay or similar for a CD based BMW mapping disc perhaps from a few years earlier if they are only now producing the DVD versions. That at least would get the system up and running.

I found this one on a quick search, which might perhaps fit the bill on paper at least, but until you actually try it in the car.....
