I've watched the tutorial on you tube on how to remove the brush housing which although out of sight in situ shouldn't be too hard a job.
My plan is to have a go at the cover bolts now that I know what sort of fasteners are in use. If I can successfully 'crack' these I'll nip them back up and order new bushes and wait for these to arrive before going any further.
I will report the outcome in due course!
Thanks once again!
Well I finally got round to tackling this job especially after reading David Lawrences step by step instructions. I eventually got the alternator cover bolts undone once I had found them using a dentists mirror, purchased for the job - still took me a good hour or two then unbolted the brush housing. Its all back together again with new brushes and I'm pleased to report that the battery light went out almost as soon as the engine sprung to life.
I would say that it was probably the worse job I have ever undertaken, not being able to see what's what but I'm enjoying a feeling of personal satisfaction in not having to resort to handing the job to my local garage who would have replaced the alternator rather than fix mine. Many thanks to the several responders to my thread.
