William Simons who played the role of Alf Ventress in Heartbeat has passed away.

The role he played was exactly as I recall the old style Station Sergeants of yesteryear, easy going, tactful, but smoothly and professionally getting on with their job. I did work alongside a guy just like that for several years, and I believe I learnt a lot from him.

I think William played that role well.
