Wet carpets can be an issue, but that's usually due to the drainage holes in the boot and under the driver and passengers footwell becoming blocked. The plenum is another drainage hole on the outside of the car, which when blocked can damage the ECU. There's a how to on modifying the plastic panels under the windscreen so that you can easily check it for blockages here:

Alternatively we have a nano meet held in Wolverhampton every month or so where you can have you car checked over for things like the above plus other common faults like turbo intercooler hoses and lower engine mounts.
