There is no common water pump issue on any of the Mercedes engines fitted to the E-Class.

The only real 'common' e-class engine issues are a) injector 'black death' i.e. injector very difficult to remove due to seal leakage eventually meaning the injector is stuck in the head with black gunge. A lot of specialists can now deal with this using proper injector removal tools. b) the other common but major issue was the premature balance shaft wear on the 3.5L V6 petrol CGI engine up to 2008.

I suspect your friend's cost of £5k was for damage caused as a result of coolant loss due to water pump failure. Do you believe the cost of sorting a KV6 following overheating would have been any different when the cars were newer?

Generally, Mercedes engines are robust. Also, there are some excellent independent specialists who can undertake any job on the cars and engines. We have one such specialist about 5 miles from us.
