Thanks for the responses - from the LR forum it seems that ATF will not cause any harm which gives me some comfort but will probably change it to MTF when I get the chance.
T-cut - The noisy reverse was (according to the ex Rover mechanic) a specific problem on just some of the Rovers at the time not a generic noise from the box in reverse. I also thought the Getrag box had synchro on reverse and would not have straight cut gears?
