Firstly i assume they are talking about Head Gasket failure on your 1.8.
They are spouting nonsense re the V6 and the Diesel as HGF is rare on these cars. As to phasing the diesels out - they are right but you could pick up a good example for small money - folk will still be in diesels for years to come.
The O2 Lambda sensors are readily available and the Cat can be sourced. You need a new head gasket - either an elastomer gasket or multi layer steel gasket depending on the liner heights. Not a massive job for a competent garage. If you did require a replacement engine a 1.8 non turbo can be got for less than £500.
As stated above i would seek another garage.
