It's a good question by the Op and a good point above by 'Baxlin'.

I have bought 'cheap' too but find very quickly that little fibres come out after a few washes and they generally feel thin to handle.
Those fibres I mention are very small land you can only see these when the sun shines on or through your finish

Suffice to say that I don't think this has happened yet with the couple of more 'expensive' ones that I have been given. It is those that I tend to keep for the better finishing jobs on the car - you know those MF towels that feel lush and thick to begin with

It is those better ones that you can use to remove the little fibres to but cheaper ones won't.....

The cheapies also will not hold so much moisture when using a mf cloth as a chamois either.

Just my 2p.....
It'll be interesting to read other findings.....
