Yes.
Don't know about others but I keep the backplate bolted and aggressively use my angle grinder to destroy the lip on the ferrule and then pull the backplate forwards. Once free, I very gently grind the rest of the ferrule until the metal blues and gradually peel it away from the handbrake cable within. Never had to replace the handbrake cable, but do the job very slowly, grind, peel, grind peel.
