I used to stick an extra gallon in the tank between fill ups then when"she" asked what it was doing to the gallon, I'd get her to do the maths, gallons to miles on trip mileometer. It would often raise a smile and get a "Hey! That's not bad for a V6 is it?"

P.S. Don't tell her!
