I have been playing with just using my iPhone 11 for photos of our cats at home for the last month and keeping the DSLR tucked away
I'm pretty impressed with what you can get out of a camera phone along with a little post capture editing.
The phone uses both rear lenses and in built software algorithms to achieve a shallow depth of field.
It doesn't get it completely right. The front to back out of focus areas sometimes confuses. Cats whiskers being rendered as background rather than in focus part of the subject for instance.
For the most part though I'm happy with the results
