Default Wheel bearing thrust washer.

I had to replace a rear wheel bearing today, as it was starting to make dreaded noises.
All came apart as expected in a few minutes, except for the piece of metal that dropped out on removal. turned out to be the tab of the thrust washer.
Anyone else had this, should it be replaced? what is the purpose of the tab once it is all torqued back up?
