Found it! It is attached to the metal side panel just ahead of the driver's A-pillar, more or less behind the light switch module (where you said it was in an early post!). However, it is almost completely covered by its metal attachment bracket which is probably why I missed it last time I looked. It is also bigger than I imagined - a case of "Oh, so that's it".

I've also discovered that the two lower plastic fasteners holding the cover panel above the pedals on, unscrew rather than pull out! Likewise with the fuse cover panel in the passenger footwell.

It looks a bit fiddly to release and access the K-bus header from where it is, so I think I'll look at getting a T4 on it instead (following Arctic's suggestion, I am in conversation with a T4 owner).
