Thanks Dave and Kaiser.

I'm not sure there was any gunk in the system, the cooling fluid was changed a few months ago when I got the car, the old stuff looked very clear and fresh.

I am assuming that it was overheating because the fan was us. Over a space of time it was probably venting and losing a little fluid each time.

With the decent weather I was not using the air con or demist much which meant the fan was hardly ever available.

On the fateful warm evening, I was up and down the steep hills several times, the coolant was getting lower and lower until I got the overheat warning.

That's the only explanation my fuddled mind can come up with.

Fingers crossed it will be ok now, but I'll obviously keep a more regular eye on fluid levels.
