Due to the close coupling of the five drive wheels the middle axel wheels never were flanged as the overall drive train distance could have caused the locomotive to derail itself passing over a short radius point. For this reason the centre wheels were not flanged.
These living beasts were beautiful modern locomotives just don’t cut it. I seem to remember the reason that was given was the electrification of the railways. Yet today in the end of the second decade of the 21st Century and Diesel is still the tractive Force for more than 60% of all tonnage moved on the railways today.
