I think that the problem is that our "old" style cars have squared corners as opposed to the more modern rounded ones that most people are used to. They just wind on the steering as they reverse out of parking bays, paying no attention to what is parked around them!
Check out the number of brick pillars with scuff marks on them in car parks etc.
