Yes those 996's are deep pocket cars, a workmate had one after an inheritance. He bought it from a Porsche dealer and within a 3 or 4 months it needed some major work but was luckily it was covered under there all encompassing warranty that comes when you buy a car from a main dealer.
12 months later and the engine management light came on and another trip to the dealer diagnosed a failing oil pump. The quote to repair this was in excess of £12k. The car was collected and he sold it to a specialist for a huge loss on his initial purchase price.
In the 18 months of ownership he had a couple of services that cost in excess of £600 each, new front brakes and two sets of tyres at over £1200 a set.
With the depreciation and running costs he reckons it cost him over £20k to do 15,000 miles. He now drives a Merc AMG.
