I used a hand cranked one for years to pull my caravan up the drive, from the road. Hand cranked ones with a ratchet can be had for £10- £15 on ebay. You could even rig up a couple of pulleys, inside the garage, to enable you to crank from outside the garage.

We thought about that idea but have Now decided against it. But thanks for the suggestion.
